Why toner went purple, and the fix

Updated · 3 min read · ✓ Reviewed by a licensed colorist

Short answer

Violet can leave a visible violet cast when its deposit exceeds the warmth available to neutralize, which often happens on light, porous blonde. Adjust the shade, concentration and background to the canvas and desired result, and apply porous ends last or dilute them with 000 Crystal Clear. Strand test first.

The three usual causes

  1. More violet than warmth. Violet can leave a visible violet cast when its deposit exceeds the warmth available to neutralize. V and VV have no background color: they’re pure reflect.
  2. Porous ends. High-porosity hair grabs more pigment, so the ends go deeper and more violet than the rest.
  3. Too much violet for the canvas. A level 10 shows only pale yellow, so it usually needs much less violet than a level 9 or 8.

Fixing it today

A carefully selected warm formula may rebalance excess cool tone; strand-test because additional deposit can change depth and reflect.

Gold-containing formulas may help balance excess violet. Gold Rose (GRO) is a gold-and-rose reflect for warm, rose-tinted results, not a universal purple fix: it still deposits, so it can change depth and add pink. It can be used as an additive in a re-gloss.

The GRO shades (010GRO Sparkling Wine, 09GRO Blush Spritz, 07GRO Golden Fizz) are Bonder Inside only.

Preventing it next time

  • Adjust the violet shade, concentration and background to the canvas and desired result. Adding a natural background shade such as N, NW or GB (for example, 09V + 09N) can help control the result, but it is one formulation choice, not a requirement.
  • Choose the application order for the zones. Porous ends often go on last, or dilute the ends formula with 000 Crystal Clear.
  • On level 9 and 10 hair the shades already carry the least pigment, so it’s often better to choose a lighter shade than to add a lot of Clear.
  • Strand test, and adjust the formula to how the hair responds.
